The Laws of Thermodynamics Explained for High Schoolers
Thermodynamics is the study of heat and temperature, and how they relate to energy and work. Basically, it's the science of energy transfer!
Zeroth Law
If two things are the same temperature as a third thing, they are the same temperature as each other. It sounds obvious, but it's why thermometers work!
First Law
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one form to another. If a system gets hotter, that energy had to come from somewhere.
Second Law
Things naturally tend to get more messy and disordered over time. This disorder is called entropy. Heat always flows naturally from hotter objects to colder ones.
Third Law
Absolute zero is the coldest possible temperature, where all molecular motion stops. As you get closer to it, the entropy (disorder) approaches zero.
